With a bit of delay, another Photo of the week from Japan:

This is a pretty known place, the Itsukushima Shrine, better known as the Miyajima floating torii. It is situated in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. This shintoist shrine is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as designated as National Treasure by the Japanese government. Its particularity is to have its feet in the water during the high tides, hence its name of “floating torii”.
The photo is a long exposure taken with a Lee Filters Big Stopper (10 stops) in order to reach a 30 seconds exposure. I’ve added a 2 stops Grad ND filter for the sky and a circular polarizer, both from Lee filters too. Then besides the standard Adobe Lightroom workflow, I used Nik Collection Color Efex 4 and in particular its Dark Contrast and Bleach filters to make the sky and the water pop. Lastly, in Adobe Photoshop, I blended the original photo with the edited one to soften a bit the land an bring back some colors. The final photo gives a bit of a sad feeling, but with this kind of sky and this lonely shrine in the middle of the sea, that was definitely the mood of the moment. I just regret the high tides weren’t during sunset, it could have been a memorable shot!
